Although Germany might get most of the credit for the world’s best beer festivals, Europe has a lot more beer and wine festivals on offer that aren’t as packed as Oktoberfest. These beer fests are much more suited to families, meaning you can combine your love for sipping beer in the sun with your quality time with your family.
Altausseer Bierzelt, Austria
Complete with dirndls and lederhosen, this small and intimate version of Oktoberfest is, perhaps surprisingly, perfect for families. The festival is a three day event on the first weekend of September. Held in the friendly and sleepy hamlet of Altaussee, it gives you the opportunity to experience a very local equivalent of Oktoberfest surrounded by beautiful nature. What’s more, there’s plenty of other attractions in the area, from the huge lakes to the surrounding spas. Stay in one of our holiday parks in Styria and enjoy a relaxing family break characterised by Austrian traditions, delicious beer and stunning surroundings.

Cannstatter Volksfest, Germany
While this ‘folk festival’ is not, strictly speaking, a beer festival, many people consider it the second biggest beer festival after Oktoberfest. It opens in the last week of September with the traditional keg tapping ceremony and goes on for three weeks. Located in Stuttgart, there are plenty of attractions to explore, include fairground rides, traditional markets, a parade and fireworks. There’s even a miniature Alpine Village and a French Village.
