Volendam
Volendam is a small fishing village with working class roots. The real highlight of this town is the fish stalls selling delicious herring and smoked eel, but the bars and cafés on the harbour are also well worth a visit. The Volendam museum is a popular tourist attraction, and showcases an assortment of traditional dress, furniture and 19th century art.
Edam
Edam is historically much wealthier than the other traditional fishing villages, finding prosperity through merchant trading and ship building in the 16th and 17th centuries. The tranquil backstreets of Edam provide some well-deserved respite after the hustle and bustle of Volendam. Of course, you can’t visit Edam without a trip to the world-famous Edam cheese market. This cheese market has existed since the Middle Ages, and the lively towns holds historic re-enactments every Wednesday during the summer.
Marken
Marken is a little village that was originally situated on an island. Plagued by floods, a dike between Marken and the mainland was built in 1957. However, the village still retains much of its island charm and cars are forbidden. The houses, many of which are listed, are painted a distinctive dark green colour and built on wooden poles to endure the frequent flooding. Strolling through this old-world village, you may come across some of the older inhabitants still wearing their traditional dress.
